Case Study Narrative: A Jellico Warehouse Transformation

A 120,000-square-foot distribution center in Jellico operated 24/7 under 400-watt metal halide fixtures. Light levels hovered around 18 foot-candles, below the recommended 30–50 for precision picking. Elevated fixture heights complicated maintenance, requiring scissor lifts and frequent lamp replacements.

HEP conducted a detailed audit and proposed:

  • 200-watt LED high bays with optical lenses tuned for racked aisles
  • Wireless motion sensors grouped into zones for adaptive response
  • A cloud-based lighting management platform providing analytics

Implementation occurred over two weekends. Post-upgrade measurements revealed an average illuminance of 45 foot-candles and an 80 % reduction in lighting energy. Annual maintenance tasks dropped from 150 lamp changes to virtually none. The facility reported fewer picking errors and improved worker satisfaction—an intangible yet significant benefit.
