What our customers say

The guys from HEP did a great job installing my Carrier HVAC unit. They took their time and made sure everything was done right. They asked me several times if I thought everything looked good throughout the install. There will be a inspection technician that will come out to do a follow-up to make sure the job was done properly, check the unit, and make sure the thermostat is working correctly. Everyone that I talked to from HEP was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend using this company. Thank you for your service! Jody Technician came out the next day and checked the unit and all the work performed. All employees seem to care about the customers.

My HVAC system went down on a late Saturday night and i called HEP right away. They were calm and friendly on the phone, which allowed for us to get a tech out to my home. Justin came to my house at 7pm and did not leave until the problem was solved in every aspect of my issue at 11:30pm. I currently have a pregnant wife and he understood we needed to get air moving again. We worked late into the night to make sure we could have cool flowing air for the night. Once the job was completed for the day, he came back a second day to install new wiring within the home for the thermostat to the HVAC. He found and fixed previous issues from the prior homeowner and left my home better than how he found it. I am extremely appreciative of Justin and if you call HEP around the Knoxville area, I will request him in a heartbeat if I ever have any more issues and I think you should to. Thank you, Justin for your help and expertise.

The Importance of Modern Thermostat Technology in Hixson Homes

A thermostat is the command center of every heating and air conditioning system, yet it is often overlooked until it malfunctions or falls behind current technology. In Hixson, where humid summers and brisk winters place heavy demands on HVAC equipment, upgrading the thermostat can be one of the most impactful improvements a homeowner can make. HEP focuses on delivering thermostat upgrades that go far beyond simple temperature control, enabling households to optimize comfort, energy efficiency, and indoor air quality day after day.

Unique Climate Considerations in Hixson

Hixson’s location along the Tennessee River contributes to seasonal humidity spikes and frequent temperature swings. These fluctuations put stress on older, manual thermostats that lack the real-time responsiveness necessary for maintaining consistent indoor comfort. By installing thermostats equipped with advanced sensors and adaptive algorithms, HEP helps residents accommodate rapid weather changes without constantly adjusting settings.

Energy Efficiency and Monthly Utility Savings

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that heating and cooling account for more than 50 % of a typical household’s energy consumption. In neighborhoods across Hixson, many families rely on older thermostats with limited scheduling options, which can lead to:

  • HVAC systems running while the house is empty
  • Temperature overshooting when occupants return home
  • Unnecessary cycling that increases mechanical wear

A modern thermostat with smart scheduling, occupancy detection, and load-balancing capabilities reduces run times during off-peak periods while preserving comfort. Over the course of a year, these savings can translate into notable reductions in energy bills and an extended lifespan for furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioners.

How HEP Enhances Comfort with Professional Thermostat Upgrades

HEP’s approach is built on the understanding that each home is unique. The company doesn’t simply replace a thermostat; it investigates the entire HVAC ecosystem to ensure every component performs optimally once the new unit is installed.

Comprehensive Assessment of Existing Systems

Before recommending any device, HEP technicians evaluate:

  • The type and age of the heating and cooling equipment
  • Wiring configuration and electrical load capacity
  • Ductwork layout and potential zoning requirements
  • Current thermostat placement in relation to drafts, sunlight, and airflow

This holistic evaluation allows HEP to foresee compatibility issues, plan necessary wiring revisions, and determine whether additional sensors or zoning options will enhance overall performance.

Seamless Integration with Current HVAC Equipment

Not all thermostats communicate the same way. Some furnaces use single-stage control, while others rely on multi-stage or variable-speed signals. HEP technicians match the thermostat’s output requirements to the existing HVAC system, preventing issues such as:

  • Short cycling because of incompatible staging
  • Blower fan miscommunication that can lead to inadequate airflow
  • Heat pump reversing-valve timing errors during defrost cycles

Proper integration ensures every part of the system remains in sync, delivering stable temperatures and balanced humidity.

Precision Calibration for Year-Round Comfort

After installation, a thermostat must be calibrated to the home’s environment. HEP measures actual supply and return temperatures, verifies sensor accuracy, and fine-tunes differential settings so the system activates at precisely the right moment. In combination with customized schedules, calibration guarantees:

  • Even heat distribution on chilly winter evenings
  • Controlled humidity removal during steamy summer afternoons
  • Minimized temperature swings during transitional spring and autumn periods

Smart Thermostats vs. Programmable Thermostats

Modern devices fall into two primary categories: programmable and smart. Each offers a distinct set of benefits, and HEP guides clients toward the best option based on lifestyle, technological comfort, and long-term goals.

Core Features of Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats connect to home Wi-Fi networks and utilize cloud-based analytics. Key capabilities include:

  • Learning algorithms that study occupant behavior and automatically create schedules
  • Remote control through smartphone apps or voice assistants
  • Weather responsiveness to preheat or precool based on local forecasts
  • Energy usage reports that highlight opportunities for savings

Smart models also integrate with other connected devices such as smart vents, air purifiers, and whole-house humidifiers, forming a cohesive smart-home ecosystem.

Advantages of Programmable Thermostats

Programmable thermostats are ideal for residents who prefer tactile, local control or have privacy concerns about cloud connectivity. Their strengths include:

  • Simple weekday/weekend scheduling without the need for apps
  • Hard-button or touchscreen interfaces that remain functional without internet access
  • Lower upfront cost compared with some premium smart units
  • Compatibility with older HVAC systems lacking advanced communication protocols

Selecting the Right Model for Your Hixson Property

HEP evaluates the following factors when helping homeowners choose:

  1. Household routine consistency (shift work vs. standard 9-to-5 schedules)
  2. Willingness to use mobile apps and smart-home platforms
  3. Desire for advanced energy tracking and reporting
  4. Existing HVAC equipment communication requirements (single-stage, multi-stage, modulating, or communicating furnaces)
  5. Potential for future system expansions, such as zoning or whole-home dehumidification

By aligning features with lifestyle and equipment, HEP ensures the chosen thermostat delivers tangible benefits rather than unused bells and whistles.

Key Features HEP Recommends for Hixson Residents

Wi-Fi Connectivity and Mobile App Control

Hixson residents frequently commute to Chattanooga or travel along US-27. Remote access provides peace of mind and the flexibility to:

  • Lower heating setpoints after forgetting to adjust the thermostat in the morning rush
  • Increase cooling intensity before arriving home on a muggy day
  • Receive push notifications if indoor temperatures deviate beyond preset thresholds

Adaptive Learning Algorithms

Learning thermostats analyze daily patterns over time, creating incremental adjustments that result in:

  • Smoother temperature transitions
  • Reduced energy consumption by preheating or precooling during off-peak energy periods
  • Improved comfort without manual tweaks

Zoning Compatibility

Many north Hamilton County homes have multiple floors and expansive living areas. Zoning allows individual areas to maintain different temperatures, combating:

  • Upstairs overheating in summer
  • Basement chill in winter
  • Conflicting comfort preferences among family members

HEP installs thermostats capable of controlling motorized dampers, zone boards, and variable-speed blowers to deliver precise comfort throughout the property.

Remote Diagnostics and Alerts

HEP-approved thermostats can transmit diagnostic information directly to cloud portals, enabling technicians to:

  • Analyze fault codes before an on-site visit
  • Identify inefficient cycling or excessive run times
  • Recommend proactive maintenance to prevent breakdowns

This data-driven approach reduces downtime and helps homeowners make informed decisions about system upgrades or repairs.

Step-by-Step Overview of the HEP Thermostat Upgrade Process

Pre-Installation Inspection

A successful upgrade begins with a thorough inspection, during which HEP technicians:

  1. Document the model and performance specifications of the existing HVAC system
  2. Verify voltage requirements (24-volt, millivolt, or line-voltage)
  3. Check for sufficient C-wire availability for powering smart thermostats
  4. Assess wall integrity and existing hole dimensions to ensure a proper fit

Safe Removal of the Existing Thermostat

Safety is paramount. HEP:

  • Shuts off power at the breaker panel to eliminate electrical hazards
  • Labels each wire using color-coded tags to maintain correct terminal assignments
  • Carefully detaches the old backplate to avoid wall damage

Wiring and Mounting Best Practices

A secure installation minimizes future maintenance issues. Technicians:

  • Replace brittle or damaged conductors with new thermostat cable as needed
  • Install a horizontal backplate to maintain level orientation for accurate sensors
  • Seal the wall opening with fire-blocking foam or putty to prevent drafts from influencing temperature readings

System Testing and Customer Orientation

Once the new thermostat is connected, HEP performs:

  • A full system cycle test for heating, cooling, and fan-only modes
  • Verification of staging or modulating responses based on temperature call
  • Demonstration of fundamental features, including schedule programming and filter change reminders
  • Installation of the relevant mobile app on the homeowner’s smartphone (when applicable)

By the time the technician departs, residents feel comfortable operating their new thermostat and have a clear understanding of maintenance requirements.

Common Signs That Indicate a Thermostat Upgrade Is Due

Inconsistent Temperature Readings

Fluctuations of more than two degrees between the setpoint and actual room temperature often signify sensor drift or wiring degradation. Upgrading eliminates these discrepancies, preventing chilly drafts or hot spots.

Short Cycling and Constant Fan Operation

If the system turns on and off rapidly or the blower fan runs without reaching the programmed temperature, the thermostat may be misreading signals or failing to regulate the equipment’s staging. This problem wastes energy, accelerates equipment wear, and can be corrected by installing a more reliable control unit.

Outdated Interface or Lack of Features

Mechanical sliders, mercury bulbs, and limited scheduling options restrict energy-saving potential. When the interface is cumbersome or incompatible with modern lifestyle demands, HEP recommends replacing the thermostat to unlock updated capabilities.

Environmental Impact of Upgrading Your Thermostat in Hixson

Lower Carbon Footprint Through Optimized HVAC Operation

By preventing unnecessary runtime and aligning operation with comfort needs, modern thermostats reduce overall energy consumption. For households relying on electricity generated from a mix of fossil fuels and renewable sources, each kilowatt-hour saved lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Supporting TVA Energy Goals

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) encourages energy efficiency across the region. HEP’s thermostat upgrades align with TVA initiatives by decreasing peak demand stress on the grid, particularly during extreme summer afternoons or winter cold snaps, when Hixson homes typically draw the most power.

Maintenance Tips After a Thermostat Upgrade

Firmware Updates

Manufacturers release firmware patches to add features and address security vulnerabilities. Homeowners should:

  • Enable automatic updates through the thermostat’s settings
  • Periodically check the app for new versions if automatic updates are disabled

Seasonal Settings Adjustments

Even with learning algorithms, certain scenarios warrant manual tweaks:

  • Vacation mode during extended trips
  • Humidity setpoint changes during spring pollen season
  • Fan circulation schedules to combat lingering odors after home improvement projects

Best Practices at a Glance

  • Replace HVAC filters at manufacturer-recommended intervals to ensure accurate airflow readings
  • Review energy reports each month to identify abnormal spikes
  • Calibrate offset settings if indoor temperatures consistently drift one degree or more from independent room thermometers
