What our customers say

I contracted with HEP to install a new HVAC system. The one they put in is an American Standard, which gets good ratings online. It is gas heat/electric air. Charlie and Avi removed the old unit, installed the new unit. got everything wired up, installed a new thermostat (old one was problematic), and hauled away the old HVAC unit. Very cool, very professional. I now have heat working correctly for the first time since March.

My HVAC system went down on a late Saturday night and i called HEP right away. They were calm and friendly on the phone, which allowed for us to get a tech out to my home. Justin came to my house at 7pm and did not leave until the problem was solved in every aspect of my issue at 11:30pm. I currently have a pregnant wife and he understood we needed to get air moving again. We worked late into the night to make sure we could have cool flowing air for the night. Once the job was completed for the day, he came back a second day to install new wiring within the home for the thermostat to the HVAC. He found and fixed previous issues from the prior homeowner and left my home better than how he found it. I am extremely appreciative of Justin and if you call HEP around the Knoxville area, I will request him in a heartbeat if I ever have any more issues and I think you should to. Thank you, Justin for your help and expertise.

My nest Stat went out and I tried to fix it myself but couldn’t figure it out. Called HEP and they gave me a time frame of 1:00pm-6:00pm same day. They called me back at 5:00pm to let me know it would be around 7:00pm. I was 2 days with no A/C so waiting an extra hour wasn’t really an issue for me. Steve showed up and gave me a solution to my problem within 20 minutes, but he also temporarily fixed my unit Until I could get a new thermostat unit because the stat I had was faulty. He also walked me through some basic maintenance I could perform to help my HVAC run smoothly. Steve was Professional, honest and friendly! Finding that trio is almost impossible this day and age. All in all Steve is the Bob Ross of professionalism and deserves recognition for his craft. Thank you!

The guys from HEP did a great job installing my Carrier HVAC unit. They took their time and made sure everything was done right. They asked me several times if I thought everything looked good throughout the install. There will be a inspection technician that will come out to do a follow-up to make sure the job was done properly, check the unit, and make sure the thermostat is working correctly. Everyone that I talked to from HEP was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend using this company. Thank you for your service! Jody Technician came out the next day and checked the unit and all the work performed. All employees seem to care about the customers.

Why Thermostat Upgrades Matter for Rutledge Homes and Businesses

A thermostat is the brain of any heating and air conditioning system. In Rutledge, where cold mountain mornings can give way to warm afternoons, precision control over indoor climate is crucial. HEP’s thermostat upgrade service addresses this need by replacing outdated or malfunctioning units with modern, feature-rich models. The result is higher energy efficiency, consistent comfort, and greater control for property owners throughout Grainger County.

Upgrading a thermostat may seem like a small change, yet it can unlock substantial benefits:

  • Enhanced temperature accuracy, reducing hot and cold spots
  • Lower energy consumption and smaller utility bills
  • Seamless integration with high-efficiency furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioners
  • Remote access through Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity
  • Ability to create customized schedules that adapt to Rutledge’s varied climate

The Role of Thermostats in Overall HVAC Performance

Precision Control

Despite their small size, thermostats issue commands that dictate how long the furnace or air conditioner runs. Older mechanical models often allow temperature swings of up to five degrees, while modern digital thermostats maintain a tight one-degree differential. This accuracy keeps indoor conditions stable, minimizing strain on HVAC equipment.

Communication With Advanced Equipment

HEP installs high-stage, two-stage, and variable-speed systems across Rutledge. These advanced units need thermostats capable of multi-stage communication. Without an upgrade, the equipment may default to single-stage operation, wasting energy and compromising performance.

Energy Management

Regardless of fuel type—electric, gas, or dual-fuel heat pump—Rutledge residents can benefit from intelligent thermostats that:

  • Learn usage patterns over time
  • Adjust automatically based on occupancy sensors
  • Leverage local weather forecasts to optimize run times
  • Provide energy reports so owners can track consumption trends

Common Signs Your Thermostat Needs Replacing

Many homeowners focus on furnaces and air conditioners when comfort issues arise, but the thermostat is often the overlooked culprit. HEP’s technicians frequently encounter these warning signs:

  • Short cycling or continuous running
  • Unresponsive display or buttons
  • Inaccurate temperature readings compared with a handheld thermometer
  • Uneven temperatures between rooms despite balanced airflow
  • Unexpected spikes in electricity or gas usage

Types of Thermostats Offered by HEP

Non-Programmable Digital Thermostats

A direct replacement for outdated mercury or mechanical units, digital non-programmable thermostats deliver precise control without added complexity. They are ideal for vacation cabins around Cherokee Lake or rental properties where guests require straightforward operation.

Programmable Thermostats

With programmable models, Rutledge homeowners can set different temperature schedules for weekdays, weekends, or even multiple periods per day. By reducing HVAC run times when the house is empty, these thermostats typically save 10% to 15% on annual energy costs.

Smart Wi-Fi Thermostats

Smart thermostats connect to the home’s wireless network, providing remote control via smartphone apps or voice assistants. Popular features include:

  • Geofencing that adjusts settings based on the occupant’s GPS location
  • Real-time weather adjustments
  • Maintenance reminders for filter changes
  • Usage analytics broken down by hour, day, and month

Zoning Thermostats

Large homes or multi-story commercial buildings in Rutledge often suffer from temperature imbalances. Zoning allows each area to receive dedicated control through individual thermostats, dampers, and sensors. HEP designs custom zoning solutions that eliminate hot upstairs bedrooms or chilly basements.

HEP’s Comprehensive Thermostat Upgrade Process

1. Initial Assessment

A certified technician begins with a detailed inspection of the existing thermostat, wiring, and HVAC equipment. This includes:

  • Checking compatibility with multi-stage or variable-speed systems
  • Verifying the integrity of the control board and transformers
  • Assessing Wi-Fi signal strength for smart upgrades

2. Customer Consultation

Once the technical requirements are clear, the technician discusses comfort goals, lifestyle habits, and any accessibility needs. For instance, homeowners with mobility challenges may prefer voice control, while frequent travelers value robust remote access.

3. Product Selection

Using insights from the assessment, HEP recommends models that align with:

  • Desired feature set
  • Budgetary considerations
  • Future HVAC upgrade plans
  • Energy efficiency objectives

4. Professional Installation

Proper installation is critical for optimal performance. Steps include:

  • Safely shutting down HVAC power
  • Labeling and disconnecting existing thermostat wires
  • Installing a C-wire (common wire) if required for smart thermostats
  • Mounting the new thermostat level for accurate temperature readings
  • Configuring system settings for heat pump, gas furnace, or hybrid mode
  • Connecting the thermostat to Wi-Fi and verifying firmware updates

5. Testing and Calibration

HEP verifies correct operation by running the equipment through:

  • Heating and cooling cycles
  • Fan-only mode
  • Emergency heat (for heat pumps)
  • Multi-stage ramp-up sequences

This ensures the thermostat communicates properly and responds to temperature changes without lag.

6. Customer Training

Even the most advanced thermostat is only as effective as its user. Technicians provide hands-on guidance, covering:

  • Setting schedules and vacation modes
  • Interpreting energy reports
  • Using app-based controls
  • Adjusting humidity or ventilation settings

Climate Considerations for Rutledge Residents

Rutledge experiences humid subtropical conditions with four distinct seasons. Summer highs reach the upper 80s, while winter nights can drop into the 20s. A modern thermostat helps navigate these swings by:

  • Automatically activating heat pump auxiliary strips on frosty mornings
  • Controlling dehumidification during muggy July afternoons
  • Optimizing shoulder-season days when heating and cooling may both be needed within 24 hours

HEP configures thermostats to factor in local Climate Zone 4A parameters, ensuring maximum efficiency without sacrificing comfort.

Energy Savings Potential: Realistic Expectations

Upgrading from a manual to a programmable thermostat can cut HVAC runtime by 8% to 16%, depending on usage patterns. Smart models push savings further through learning algorithms and occupancy detection. In practical terms:

  • A typical Rutledge household consuming 1,200 kWh per month may reduce annual electricity usage by 900 to 1,400 kWh
  • Homes heated by propane or natural gas can shave 5% to 10% off seasonal fuel consumption
  • Commercial properties benefit from tighter control during unoccupied hours, slashing peak demand charges

Comfort and Health Benefits Beyond Savings

While reduced utility bills often motivate thermostat upgrades, comfort and wellbeing carry equal weight.

Superior Humidity Control

Modern thermostats paired with variable-speed equipment modulate airflow to manage humidity levels. Consistent indoor humidity between 35% and 50%:

  • Reduces mold growth
  • Prevents wooden floors and furniture from warping
  • Eases allergy and asthma symptoms

Enhanced Indoor Air Quality

Some smart thermostats integrate with indoor air quality accessories, triggering:

  • Whole-home ventilators during periods of stale air
  • UV lights and air cleaners when pollutant levels rise
  • Humidifiers on dry winter days

Noise Reduction

Variable-speed equipment activated by compatible thermostats runs at lower decibel levels than single-stage systems. Residents enjoy a quieter living space without abrupt starts and stops.

Integration With Home Automation Platforms

Smart thermostats often serve as the gateway to broader home automation. HEP configures integrations that allow Rutledge property owners to:

  • Automate lighting and window shades based on temperature settings
  • Receive push notifications if the temperature drops below a predetermined threshold while away
  • Link smoke detectors or CO sensors to HVAC shutoff protocols for added safety

Addressing Common Installation Challenges

Installing advanced thermostats is not always straightforward. HEP’s technicians are trained to solve obstacles such as:

  • Absence of a C-wire: They may run new low-voltage wiring or install a power extender kit.
  • Metal lath or plaster walls: Specialized anchors ensure secure mounting without damaging finishes.
  • Legacy HVAC systems: Adapters or interface modules allow new thermostats to communicate with older equipment.

Sustainability Impact of Thermostat Upgrades

Reducing energy consumption has tangible environmental benefits:

  • Lower demand for electricity from fossil-fuel power plants
