What our customers say

The guys from HEP did a great job installing my Carrier HVAC unit. They took their time and made sure everything was done right. They asked me several times if I thought everything looked good throughout the install. There will be a inspection technician that will come out to do a follow-up to make sure the job was done properly, check the unit, and make sure the thermostat is working correctly. Everyone that I talked to from HEP was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend using this company. Thank you for your service! Jody Technician came out the next day and checked the unit and all the work performed. All employees seem to care about the customers.

I contracted with HEP to install a new HVAC system. The one they put in is an American Standard, which gets good ratings online. It is gas heat/electric air. Charlie and Avi removed the old unit, installed the new unit. got everything wired up, installed a new thermostat (old one was problematic), and hauled away the old HVAC unit. Very cool, very professional. I now have heat working correctly for the first time since March.

My HVAC system went down on a late Saturday night and i called HEP right away. They were calm and friendly on the phone, which allowed for us to get a tech out to my home. Justin came to my house at 7pm and did not leave until the problem was solved in every aspect of my issue at 11:30pm. I currently have a pregnant wife and he understood we needed to get air moving again. We worked late into the night to make sure we could have cool flowing air for the night. Once the job was completed for the day, he came back a second day to install new wiring within the home for the thermostat to the HVAC. He found and fixed previous issues from the prior homeowner and left my home better than how he found it. I am extremely appreciative of Justin and if you call HEP around the Knoxville area, I will request him in a heartbeat if I ever have any more issues and I think you should to. Thank you, Justin for your help and expertise.

My nest Stat went out and I tried to fix it myself but couldn’t figure it out. Called HEP and they gave me a time frame of 1:00pm-6:00pm same day. They called me back at 5:00pm to let me know it would be around 7:00pm. I was 2 days with no A/C so waiting an extra hour wasn’t really an issue for me. Steve showed up and gave me a solution to my problem within 20 minutes, but he also temporarily fixed my unit Until I could get a new thermostat unit because the stat I had was faulty. He also walked me through some basic maintenance I could perform to help my HVAC run smoothly. Steve was Professional, honest and friendly! Finding that trio is almost impossible this day and age. All in all Steve is the Bob Ross of professionalism and deserves recognition for his craft. Thank you!

Key Features of Today’s Smart Thermostats

Learning Algorithms

Modern smart thermostats analyze daily habits—when occupants wake, leave for work, return home, and go to bed. They automatically build a schedule that aligns with those patterns, eliminating the guesswork and manual adjustments common with older models.

Geofencing Capabilities

By using a smartphone’s location, geofencing instructs the thermostat to adjust the temperature when occupants are away, then restore comfort levels just before they arrive home. This simple automation trims wasted energy without compromising comfort.

Voice Assistant Compatibility

Integration with popular voice assistants allows hands-free control of heating and cooling. A simple spoken command can raise the temperature on chilly mornings or lower it during a steamy Hixson afternoon.

Energy-Use Analytics

Detailed energy reports empower homeowners to pinpoint inefficiencies in their routines or equipment. Monthly summaries illustrate how minor schedule adjustments can translate into meaningful utility savings.

Seamless System Integration

Smart thermostats can communicate with humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air purifiers, and zoning dampers. HEP ensures each device works in harmony, creating a cohesive indoor climate management system.

Signs It’s Time for a Thermostat Upgrade

Homeowners in Hixson often wonder when it makes sense to retire an old thermostat. Below are common indicators that a replacement will provide immediate advantages:

  • Frequent need to manually adjust temperature settings
  • Noticeable temperature swings between rooms or during short intervals
  • HVAC short-cycling (rapid on-off sequences)
  • Unexplained spikes in energy bills
  • Limited or absent programmable features
  • Difficulty reading the display or using controls
  • Thermostat older than ten years or incompatible with modern HVAC add-ons

HEP’s team can diagnose these issues quickly, confirming whether the thermostat—or another component—requires attention.

The HEP Thermostat Upgrade Process

1. Comprehensive Assessment

HEP begins with a thorough evaluation, reviewing the existing HVAC setup, ductwork, and any comfort concerns. The goal is to determine which thermostat technologies align with the home’s heating and cooling infrastructure and the homeowner’s lifestyle.

2. Product Selection Guidance

Different homes require different solutions. HEP walks homeowners through features such as multi-stage compatibility, Wi-Fi connectivity, smart-home integration, and advanced sensors. By comparing options, HEP ensures each customer selects a thermostat that delivers the desired performance.

3. Professional Installation

Upgrading a thermostat might appear straightforward, yet wiring configurations vary widely. Dual-fuel heat pumps, multi-stage furnaces, or zoned systems need precise wiring to function correctly. HEP technicians handle:

  • Safe removal of the old thermostat
  • Verification of control board compatibility
  • Secure mounting and leveling
  • Correct wiring to C-wire and auxiliary connections
  • Firmware updates and device pairing

4. Configuration and Optimization

Following installation, HEP configures schedules, temperature setbacks, and any smart-home integrations. Sensors are calibrated to ensure accurate readings. Remote access via mobile apps is tested to verify seamless operation.

5. Homeowner Orientation

HEP provides a clear, jargon-free walkthrough, demonstrating how to modify schedules, view energy reports, and integrate with voice assistants. The result is confidence in leveraging every feature the new thermostat offers.

How Thermostat Upgrades Influence Energy Efficiency

Hixson homeowners often hunt for ways to counter climbing utility rates. A thermostat upgrade presents one of the quickest paths to tangible savings.

Programmable Temperature Setbacks

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that adjusting the thermostat by 7°–10°F for eight hours a day can cut annual heating and cooling costs by up to 10%. Modern thermostats apply setbacks automatically, ensuring consistent savings.

Adaptive Learning

Smart thermostats learn occupancy patterns and adjust setpoints accordingly, minimizing energy use when nobody is home. Machine learning algorithms grow more accurate over time, delivering incremental efficiency improvements.

Zoned Comfort

HEP can pair certain smart thermostats with zoned dampers, directing conditioned air only to occupied rooms. Occupants avoid over-conditioning rarely used spaces, saving energy without sacrificing comfort.

Diagnostic Alerts

Early detection of HVAC anomalies—such as failing blower motors or frozen evaporator coils—prevents energy waste and costly repairs. Smart thermostats often flag these issues before they escalate, giving homeowners time to address them proactively.

Customizing Thermostat Upgrades for Unique Home Needs

No two homes in Hixson are identical. HEP’s approach centers on tailoring each thermostat upgrade to factors such as home layout, HVAC equipment type, and the owners’ daily routines.

Single-Stage vs. Multi-Stage Systems

Some heating and cooling systems operate at a single capacity, while others modulate across several stages. HEP ensures the selected thermostat can seamlessly manage those stages, optimizing efficiency and reducing noise.

Heat Pump Compatibility

Heat pumps behave differently than traditional furnaces. They require specialized algorithms to prevent premature engagement of auxiliary heat strips, which can consume significant electricity. HEP matches thermostats that optimize heat pump performance year-round.

Humidity Management

In humid summer months, controlling moisture in the air is almost as important as managing temperature. Smart thermostats equipped with humidity sensors can direct HVAC systems or dedicated dehumidifiers, keeping indoor humidity within an ideal range of 30–50%.

Air Quality Integration

HEP integrates thermostats with air purifiers, UV lights, and ventilation systems. When indoor air quality drops, the thermostat triggers the appropriate accessory, ensuring clean, healthy air throughout the home.

Smart Thermostat Myths Debunked

Despite the documented benefits, several misconceptions linger around smart thermostat adoption. Separating fact from fiction helps homeowners make informed decisions.

Myth 1: Smart Thermostats Are Complicated

Many imagine a steep learning curve. In reality, HEP’s installation service includes a user-friendly orientation, and most homeowners master basic controls in minutes. Intuitive interfaces and guided setup wizards further reduce complexity.

Myth 2: Wi-Fi Thermostats Waste Electricity

A smart thermostat consumes minimal power, typically less than a common night light. The energy saved from improved scheduling far outweighs the device’s negligible usage.

Myth 3: Manual Thermostats Are More Reliable

Older thermostats lack self-diagnostic features, making malfunctions harder to detect. Smart models actively monitor performance, send alerts, and even apply firmware updates, enhancing reliability over time.

Best Practices After a Thermostat Upgrade

To maximize the benefits of a new thermostat, HEP recommends adopting a few straightforward habits:

  • Review weekly energy reports to track progress.
  • Modify schedules seasonally, accounting for changes in daylight hours and occupancy.
