What our customers say

The guys from HEP did a great job installing my Carrier HVAC unit. They took their time and made sure everything was done right. They asked me several times if I thought everything looked good throughout the install. There will be a inspection technician that will come out to do a follow-up to make sure the job was done properly, check the unit, and make sure the thermostat is working correctly. Everyone that I talked to from HEP was friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend using this company. Thank you for your service! Jody Technician came out the next day and checked the unit and all the work performed. All employees seem to care about the customers.

My nest Stat went out and I tried to fix it myself but couldn’t figure it out. Called HEP and they gave me a time frame of 1:00pm-6:00pm same day. They called me back at 5:00pm to let me know it would be around 7:00pm. I was 2 days with no A/C so waiting an extra hour wasn’t really an issue for me. Steve showed up and gave me a solution to my problem within 20 minutes, but he also temporarily fixed my unit Until I could get a new thermostat unit because the stat I had was faulty. He also walked me through some basic maintenance I could perform to help my HVAC run smoothly. Steve was Professional, honest and friendly! Finding that trio is almost impossible this day and age. All in all Steve is the Bob Ross of professionalism and deserves recognition for his craft. Thank you!

Why Thermostat Upgrades Matter in Chattanooga Homes

Chattanooga’s humid subtropical climate places distinctive demands on residential and light–commercial HVAC equipment. Morning temperatures can hover in the 40s during winter, then spike above 90 °F with heavy humidity in summer afternoons. A modern thermostat acts as the command center that allows heating and air conditioning systems to adapt to those rapid swings. By upgrading an outdated or inaccurate control, property owners unlock measurable gains in comfort, energy management, and long-term equipment reliability.

HEP specializes in heating and air conditioning thermostat upgrades that align advanced technology with the unique weather patterns of the Tennessee Valley. Whether the goal is granular zone control in a historic Southside bungalow or app-based scheduling in a new Riverview build, the company tailors each installation to the structure, the mechanical system, and the lifestyle of its occupants.

Key advantages include:

  • Smoother temperature transitions between cool evenings and hot afternoons
  • Reduced HVAC cycling, which lessens wear on compressors, heat exchangers, and blower motors
  • Enhanced data visibility, empowering owners to track energy consumption in real time
  • Integration with dehumidifiers and air purifiers for healthier indoor air

With electricity costs continuing to climb and comfort expectations growing higher, a thermostat upgrade is one of the most cost-effective improvements a Chattanooga property owner can make.

Signs Your Existing Thermostat Needs an Upgrade

Seemingly minor frustrations often point to a controller that is no longer keeping pace with the demands placed on the HVAC system. Recognizing the red flags early prevents discomfort and unexpected equipment strain.

Inconsistent Temperatures

  • Rooms on upper floors stay several degrees warmer in summer, forcing the air conditioner to run constantly.
  • A downstairs den feels chilly on winter mornings despite the furnace operating as usual.
  • Temperature discrepancies appear between the thermostat display and handheld thermometer readings.

Rising Energy Bills

Electric and gas statements that creep upward month after month—without a corresponding rate increase—often signal that the thermostat is not optimizing run times. Frequent short cycling wastes energy and can shave years off system life expectancy.

Outdated Technology

  • Manual mercury or slider thermostats that offer no scheduling features
  • Early digital models that lose memory during power interruptions
  • Lack of Wi-Fi connectivity, making remote adjustments impossible

If any of these scenarios sound familiar, an upgrade through HEP can restore control while future-proofing the HVAC system.

Types of Thermostats Available Through HEP

Modern thermostat design ranges from simple programmable units to sophisticated learning devices packed with sensors. HEP’s technicians evaluate equipment type, wiring status, and homeowner preferences before recommending an option that delivers the most value.

Programmable Thermostats

These models allow users to predefine temperature setpoints for different times of day. A weekday schedule might keep the home at 78 °F when unoccupied, then cool to 72 °F shortly before residents return. Benefits include:

  • Straightforward interface similar to traditional thermostats
  • Multiple day and weekend programming blocks
  • Battery-backup memory to retain settings through power outages

Smart Wi-Fi Thermostats

Smart thermostats add connectivity, robust analytics, and often a sleek touchscreen. Many pair with voice assistants and deliver firmware updates over the air. Standout features encompass:

  • Remote control via mobile app or web dashboard
  • Learning capabilities that adapt schedules based on usage patterns
  • Geofencing to adjust comfort as occupants approach or leave the property
  • Energy reports that quantify kilowatt-hour savings

Zoning-Compatible Thermostats

Large homes, split-level layouts, or properties with finished basements benefit from zoning. Dedicated thermostats communicate with motorized dampers to direct conditioned air only where needed. Advantages include:

  • Personalized comfort settings for bedrooms, living areas, and workspaces
  • Reduced runtime for zones that are unoccupied
  • Balanced humidity and airflow distribution across multiple floors

By stocking a curated selection of leading brands, HEP provides a thermostat solution for virtually any Chattanooga residence or light-commercial setting.

From Lookout Mountain estates to North Shore loft conversions, HEP’s attention to detail ensures each thermostat operates as the heart of a finely tuned comfort ecosystem.

The HEP Thermostat Upgrade Process

Initial System Assessment

An upgrade begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Technicians inspect:

  • HVAC make, model, and age
  • Existing thermostat location and wiring bundle
  • Voltage requirements (24 V low-voltage versus line-voltage systems)
  • Static pressure and airflow metrics that could influence sensor accuracy

Product Selection Guidance

Based on assessment findings, HEP presents compatible thermostat models. Discussion points cover:

  • Desired scheduling complexity
  • Interface preferences (buttons, touchscreen, voice control)
  • Integration with air quality accessories or humidifiers
  • Potential utility rebates for ENERGY STAR-qualified devices

Professional Installation

On installation day, technicians:

  • Isolate power to protect electronic components
  • Remove the old thermostat, labelling each conductor in the process
  • Install a wall plate or paint guard to cover any cosmetic imperfections
  • Terminate wiring to the new thermostat’s labeled terminals
  • Securely mount the thermostat at eye level, away from drafts or heat sources
  • Verify system type settings (heat pump, conventional, electric, or dual-fuel)

Post-Installation Calibration and Training

A thermostat is only as good as its calibration. HEP uses precision thermometers to confirm display accuracy, then calibrates temperature differentials and cycle rates within equipment tolerances. The visit concludes with:

  • Tutorial on accessing menus, creating schedules, and interpreting energy reports
  • Demonstration of the mobile app, including secure account setup
  • Written documentation of default configuration for future reference

The result is an HVAC system that responds predictably and efficiently to every seasonal swing Chattanooga delivers.

Integrating a New Thermostat With Existing Heating and Air Conditioning Equipment

Compatibility Checks

Mismatched thermostat and equipment capabilities can cause compressor lockouts, auxiliary heat overuse, or fan malfunctions. HEP’s checklist verifies:

  • Number of heat and cool stages
  • Availability of a common wire (C-wire) for continuous power
  • Communication protocols for variable-speed air handlers
  • Accessory terminals for humidity control, ERVs, or UV lights

Wiring and Power Considerations

Older homes may lack a dedicated C-wire. In those cases, HEP offers solutions such as:

  • Pulling new low-voltage cable through interior walls
  • Installing an external 24 V transformer where feasible
  • Leveraging adapter modules designed by certain smart thermostat brands

Proper power delivery prevents battery drain and ensures Wi-Fi radios run reliably.

Firmware and Software Updates

Smart thermostats periodically release performance and security updates. HEP ensures firmware is current at commissioning and educates owners on:

  • Enabling automatic update settings
  • Verifying network connectivity strength
  • Recognizing update notifications versus system alerts

Enhancing Energy Efficiency After a Thermostat Upgrade

Once a modern thermostat is operational, small habit changes amplify its savings potential.

  • Set heating temperature no higher than 68 °F while home and awake; allow it to drop to 60-62 °F overnight.
  • Maintain cooling setpoints around 76-78 °F when home; 82 °F during extended summer absences.
  • Use the thermostat’s humidity-control or “Cool-to-Dehumidify” modes to manage moisture without over-cooling.
  • Take advantage of vacation or away settings for weekend trips.
  • Review monthly energy reports and adjust schedules for continual refinement.

By pairing advanced hardware with informed usage, Chattanooga residents can see double-digit percentage reductions in energy consumption.

Addressing Common Concerns About Thermostat Replacement

Data Privacy and Security

Smart thermostats collect occupancy and usage data to optimize performance. HEP partners only with manufacturers whose platforms employ end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and regular third-party security audits.

Device Longevity

Quality programmable and smart thermostats carry warranties ranging from three to five years, and many last a decade or more. HEP’s installation methods—secure mounting, correct voltage, and surge protection—help each unit achieve maximum lifespan.

Learning Curve

While touchscreens and apps may feel unfamiliar, HEP’s individualized training, combined with intuitive interface design, shortens the adjustment period. Most users master basic scheduling within a day, and deeper features within the first month.

Seasonal Considerations for Chattanooga Residents
