I met Rueben from HEP today concerning a tune-up for my water heater. Because of the age of my water heater, 25 years, and the fact it was working perfectly, I decided due to the valve being plastic and a fear of breaking it not to do the tune-up. Rueben agreed and was kind enough give me a quote on replacing the water heater and showed me a product to keep my drain lines clear. Very nice person and very thorough in his explanation of all that HEP could offer us. Great company and great employees. I also had Zac and Adam replace two bathroom switches, as well as, install a LED light fixture in the shower. They also replaced three outside lights that we had been needing replaced for years. Great young men and are valuable asset to your company. I called HEP at 11:00 a.m., and spoke to a very nice young lady concerning a strong odor of methane gas in our laundry room and upstairs bathroom. She said a plumber would be at my house between 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. today. I received a call at 1:15 p.m. saying the plumbers were on their way. They were here by 1:40 p.m. I met two young who both were named Shaun. They were from our first handshake to our goodbye cordial, congenial, and very knowledgeable. Extremely professional young men. The moment they walked into the bathroom with the strong methane odor they knew what was wrong by asking one question. How often do you run that shower? When I told them rarely, they told me exactly what was wrong. The water in the trap for the shower had evaporated from lack of use and that was allowing the sewer gas that is normally blocked by the water in the trap to leak out of the shower drain. After a few flushes of the toilet and some running of water in the shower, my problem was solved. They took the time to clean out the shower drain and they were finished. I bought the Service Plan because of their honesty and their wonderful demeanor. Shaun and Shaun are credits to your company in many ways. I will use your company again in the future because of this visit. Thank you.

Comprehensive Lighting Audit: First Step with HEP

Before the first fixture is ordered, HEP deploys a multidisciplinary team to capture baseline data.

Site Walkthrough and Data Collection

  • Count legacy luminaires, noting wattage, mounting height, and fixture type.
  • Document control methods (switching, time clocks, relay panels).
  • Identify shadowed or over-lit zones to refine new layouts.

Photometric Analysis

HEP develops computer-generated point-by-point studies, overlaying proposed light levels on scaled floor plans. Stakeholders preview illumination patterns and confirm compliance with Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) recommendations.

Utility Bill Baseline

Twelve to twenty-four months of electric bills are gathered to establish average kilowatt-hour consumption, demand peaks, and power factor. This data anchors the savings calculation and rebate documentation.

Material Selection Criteria

Lumen Output and Distribution

HEP selects optics that deliver target lux values while minimizing spill light. Options include narrow beam patterns for racked aisles and wide batwing distributions for open offices.

Color Rendering Index (CRI) and Temperature

  • CRI above 80 is standard; specialized applications may require 90+.
  • Color temperature is tuned to occupant tasks—4000 K for alertness in office suites, 3000 K for hospitality lobbies, 5000 K for high-detail manufacturing.

Environmental Ratings

  • IP65-sealed housings withstand wash-down in food-processing plants.
  • IK08 or higher impact ratings deter vandalism in transit shelters.

Durability in Minnesota Climate

Outdoor fixtures endure freeze-thaw cycles, snow accumulation, and road-salt spray. HEP specifies drivers rated to start at –40 °C and housings with corrosion-resistant coatings.

Controls Strategy for Maximum Savings

Occupancy and Vacancy Sensors

Passive infrared (PIR) or dual-technology sensors detect motion and infrared heat signatures, dimming or switching off after configurable timeouts.

Daylight Harvesting

Light sensors measure available daylight through windows or skylights, trimming artificial output to maintain consistent illuminance.

Wireless vs. Wired Networks

  • Wireless mesh simplifies retrofits in finished spaces where conduit pulls are costly.
  • PoE (Power over Ethernet) delivers both low-voltage power and data on a single CAT-6 cable, ideal for new construction.

Scene Scheduling

Pre-programmed scenes—“Open,” “Operate,” “Clean,” “Close”—optimize light levels for each occupancy pattern without manual switches.

Industry-Specific Upgrade Strategies

Measuring Success: Key Performance Indicators

Energy Usage Intensity (EUI)

A reduction in kBtu per square foot verifies that lighting savings translate into overall building performance gains.

Maintenance Tickets

Decreased service calls serve as a leading indicator of lifecycle cost improvements.

Occupant Satisfaction Surveys

Although not mandatory, many clients gather anonymous feedback. A typical trend is increased perception of safety and productivity.

ROI Timeline

Actual returns are plotted against projections, with HEP’s metered data often revealing quicker payback than initial models predicted.

Common Misconceptions About LED Retrofitting

LEDs Generate No Heat

While substantially cooler than incandescent or HID, LEDs still create heat at the driver and diode junction. Proper thermal management is vital for longevity.

Incompatibility with Legacy Dimming Systems

Most modern retrofit drivers accept 0–10 V or DALI signals. HEP performs small-area pilot tests to verify dimming curves before full rollout.

Flicker Is Unavoidable

High-quality drivers with low total harmonic distortion (THD) eliminate perceivable flicker, protecting sensitive individuals and high-speed cameras.

Blue Light Concerns Are Inevitable

Spectral power distributions can be tailored. Amber-rich or tunable fixtures mitigate blue-light exposure at night, aligning with American Medical Association recommendations.
