What our customers say

Joshua McCarty was the HEP tech that came to perform the annual check-up on our HVAC system. This guy is great! I learned more about our furnace and AC from him than I did from the company that installed it 6 years ago. In fact, he found a safety issue that was also a code violation. Took time to show me where it was, the problem and what could happen if left as is. I knew immediately I wanted it replaced. Rather than going to the company that installed it and having them fix their mistake, I chose to schedule Joshua to come back and fix it. I have now found my go-to HVAC pro. I have always been happy with HEP and now I feel even more comfortable This is my second year paying for the annual service contract and it is definitely worth it. Thank you HEP and especially Joshua McCarty.

On March 13,2018,we had a heating and air system put in by Eddie Hawkins and Tim Sexton. These were the nicest men that have ever done work for us. It was put into my 90 year old dads house. He walks with a walker, so these gentlemen, went over to him, shook his hand, and talked to him, not making him get up. They did things not even on their list to do, so my father would not be charged for it. They found black mold in the vents, wiped it out and explained the Halo to us.They were here from 9am to about 4:30 pm. Explained the system to us, Eddie even gave us his personal cell phone number, in case something came up we needed to ask.Thanked my dad for allowing them to be in his house. If these men are an example of the other workers from Hep, they will go a long way. Would give them 10 stars if I could. Very nice, helpful, courteous men--Way to go Eddie and Tim

Comprehensive Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation & Indoor Air Quality Solutions in Tullahoma by HEP

Tucked amid the rolling hills of southern Middle Tennessee, Tullahoma experiences a surprisingly wide spectrum of seasonal weather events. Sweltering, humid summers regularly push the heat index above 100 °F, while damp, chilly winters can test even a well-insulated home’s ability to retain warmth. In all seasons, indoor air quality is influenced by local pollen, agricultural dust, and periodic temperature inversions that trap airborne contaminants close to the ground. HEP recognizes these regional realities and has built a full-service heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and indoor air quality practice around them. Whether the task involves designing a new HVAC layout for a lake-view residence near Rutledge Falls or retrofitting an older downtown bungalow with modern air filtration, HEP applies a deep knowledge of Tullahoma’s climate to every project.

How Local Climate Drives HVAC Strategy

Tullahoma’s Köppen classification straddles a humid subtropical and temperate climate zone, a blend that creates distinct demands:

  • Prolonged summer humidity necessitates high-efficiency dehumidification technology and robust condensate management.
  • Intermittent winter freezes call for reliable heating equipment that ramps quickly without excessive energy draw.
  • Large spring pollen loads require multi-stage filtration systems to maintain indoor air cleanliness.

By aligning system design with these environmental factors, HEP maximizes comfort, boosts equipment longevity, and reduces energy consumption for local homeowners.

Heating Services Designed for Energy-Efficient Comfort

Seasonal lows in January often dip into the 20s, and occasional cold snaps can catch under-prepared systems off guard. HEP’s heating solutions focus on predictable warmth, optimized fuel usage, and streamlined maintenance.

Furnace Installation & Replacement

For homes on natural gas or propane, a properly sized furnace remains one of the most dependable heat sources. HEP evaluates:

  • Square footage, insulation levels, and window placement to select an optimal BTU rating.
  • Variable-speed blower configurations that modulate airflow, minimizing temperature swings.
  • Advanced heat exchangers fabricated to resist expansion-and-contraction fatigue, extending service life.

When replacement is required, technicians perform a comprehensive load calculation, remove outdated equipment according to EPA disposal guidelines, and integrate the new furnace with existing ductwork while balancing airflow to every room.

Heat Pump Expertise

Electric heat pumps are well suited to Tullahoma’s relatively moderate winters. HEP offers:

  • Standard air-source heat pumps for homes with open duct networks.
  • Dual-fuel hybrid systems that switch to gas backup during extreme cold, optimizing efficiency.
  • Variable-capacity inverter drives that adjust compressor speed in real time, cutting energy waste.

Installation teams ensure proper refrigerant line sizing and airtight seals, preventing performance losses that commonly arise from overlooked installation details.

Air Conditioning Excellence

July temperatures routinely exceed 90 °F with humidity levels above 70 %, turning cooling into a necessity rather than a luxury. HEP’s air-conditioning services emphasize rapid temperature pull-down, humidity suppression, and quiet operation.

Precision AC Installation

Every new air-conditioning project begins with a Manual J load calculation that accounts for roof color, window orientation, shade coverage, and envelope leakage. This data drives the selection of:

  • High-SEER/SEER2 condensers that deliver superior seasonal efficiency.
  • Matched evaporator coils with anti-corrosion coatings, especially valuable in areas exposed to airborne agricultural chemicals.
  • Low-noise fan blades and compressor acoustic dampening, protecting neighborhood tranquility during late-night cooling cycles.

Ongoing AC Maintenance

Preventative maintenance programs center on:

  • Coil cleaning to remove pollen and cottonwood fluff that impair heat transfer.
  • Refrigerant charge verification to keep pressures within manufacturer-specified ranges.
  • Thermostat calibration that maintains tight temperature differentials, avoiding “ghost cooling” cycles.

Regular tune-ups can reclaim up to 15 % of lost efficiency and prevent mid-summer breakdowns that often stem from neglected airflow or refrigerant issues.

Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality: The HEP Difference

While many HVAC providers focus solely on temperature control, HEP treats ventilation and indoor air quality (IAQ) as core components of residential comfort. Proper ventilation exchanges stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air, but only when designed to avoid energy waste and pollutant intrusion.

Whole-House Ventilation Strategies

HEP selects from several ventilation methodologies, tailoring each to home layout and occupant lifestyle:

  • Balanced HRV/ERV systems that recover heat (and moisture, in the case of ERVs) from outgoing air, trimming energy costs.
  • Supply-only setups that create slight positive pressure, discouraging infiltration of unfiltered outdoor air through cracks.
  • Exhaust-only configurations for high-humidity spaces such as laundry rooms, using demand-controlled exhaust fans linked to humidity sensors.

Each system incorporates insulated duct runs and backdraft dampers to eliminate condensation risks and pest entry points.

Advanced Air Filtration & Purification

Tullahoma’s spring bloom season blankets the region in microscopic pollen grains, making high-performance filtration indispensable. HEP offers graduating options, including:

  • MERV 8 through MERV 16 pleated media filters for particulate removal down to 0.3 µm.
  • Electronic air cleaners that ionize and capture ultra-fine particles without significant pressure drop.
  • UV-C germicidal lamps installed within the air handler to neutralize bacteria, mold spores, and viruses on coil surfaces.
  • Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) units that break down VOCs emitted from paints, cleaning agents, and new furnishings.

Humidity Control Solutions

Balanced humidity between 30 % and 50 % enhances respiratory comfort and prevents mold growth. HEP integrates:

  • Whole-house dehumidifiers that by-pass the main HVAC coil, efficiently removing moisture without over-cooling spaces.
  • Steam humidifiers for winter operation, protecting hardwood floors and wooden musical instruments favored by Tullahoma’s vibrant arts community.
  • Smart humidity sensors that modulate equipment operation automatically, maintaining set points in both occupied and unoccupied modes.

Seasonal Maintenance Programs

Routine care extends the lifespan of mechanical components and safeguards indoor air quality through every Tennessee season.

Winter Preparedness Program

Before the first frost, HEP technicians:

  • Inspect heat exchangers for micro-fractures using infrared cameras, preventing carbon monoxide leaks.
  • Test ignition systems and flame sensors to ensure reliable cold-weather startup.
  • Lubricate motor bearings and verify gas pressure settings, promoting fuel-efficient combustion.

Summer Readiness Protocol

Pre-cooling season checkups focus on:

  • Ensuring condenser coil fins are free of debris to maintain ideal air movement.
  • Verifying condensate drain slope and trap priming to avert interior water damage.
  • Updating firmware on smart thermostats, enabling peak-load avoidance features during grid stress events.

Importance of Professional Ductwork Services

Energy-efficient equipment can still underperform if conditioned air fails to reach intended rooms. Duct integrity plays a decisive role.

Duct Sealing & Insulation

HEP applies mastic sealant or aerosolized sealants to close gaps where rigid metal meets flexible duct or where branch take-offs align with plenums. Following sealing, technicians wrap ducts in R-8 insulation, minimizing conductive heat loss in unconditioned crawlspaces and attics.

Duct Cleaning Techniques

Over time, dust, pet dander, and microbial film accumulate on duct walls, compromising airflow and spreading odor. HEP uses:

  • Negative-pressure HEPA vacuums that prevent contaminants from escaping into living space.
  • Agitation tools sized to each duct diameter, loosening debris without scoring metal surfaces.
  • Sanitation foggers compatible with MERV-rated filter media, leaving behind a micro-biostatic barrier without VOC off-gassing.

Smart Thermostats and Home Automation Integration

Modern Tullahoma households often feature interconnected devices, from automated lighting to voice-controlled entertainment systems. HEP deploys HVAC controls that communicate seamlessly within these ecosystems.

Adaptive Comfort Algorithms

Smart thermostats learn occupancy patterns, local weather forecasts, and even utility demand pricing to adjust:

  • Compressor staging for incremental cooling rather than abrupt temperature swings.
  • Fan speed modulation that disperses air evenly, reducing stratification in vaulted ceilings.
  • Humidity set points that anticipate rainstorms, pre-dehumidifying spaces to avert that sticky, post-shower feeling common in southern summers.

Integration with platforms such as Apple HomeKit or Amazon Alexa allows homeowners to manage HVAC settings via voice command or smartphone, enhancing convenience while curbing energy use.

Commitment to Sustainability & Energy Savings

Reducing environmental impact is not just an industry talking point—it is woven into HEP’s project workflow.

High-Efficiency Equipment Selection

Whenever feasible, HEP recommends ENERGY STAR-qualified furnaces, heat pumps, and air conditioners that:

  • Employ variable-speed motors using brushless DC technology, trimming electricity consumption up to 30 %.
  • Utilize microchannel coils that require less refrigerant and provide superior heat transfer.
  • Offer modulating gas valves, matching output to real-time heating demand rather than cycling at full blast.

Eco-Friendly Refrigerants and Materials

Transitioning away from high-GWP refrigerants is essential. HEP:

  • Installs systems charged with R-454B or R-32 where approved, cutting greenhouse potential nearly in half compared to legacy R-410A.
  • Recycles scrap metal, cardboard, and pallet wood generated during installation.
  • Selects low-VOC mastic and insulation to protect indoor air quality.

Safety Standards and Quality Assurance

Every HEP project is subjected to meticulous verification, ensuring standards compliance and long-term reliability.

Rigorous Technician Training

Technicians participate in:

  • NATE certification programs focusing on system diagnostics and airflow analysis.
  • OSHA safety modules tailored to confined attic work and electrical lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Manufacturer-specific continuing education on emerging compressor and inverter technologies.

Post-Service Verification Checklist

Upon job completion, a multi-point checklist covers:

  • Static pressure readings across return and supply plenums.
  • Combustion analysis, confirming optimal CO and O₂ levels.
  • IAQ sensor calibration for particulate, CO₂, and VOC monitoring devices.

Data is archived in client service records, facilitating trend analysis during subsequent maintenance visits.

Recognizing Signs Your HVAC System Needs Attention

Early detection of performance issues minimizes downtime and repair costs. Watch for:

  • Uneven room temperatures despite thermostat consistency.
  • Short, frequent cycling of the furnace or air conditioner.
  • Sudden spikes in energy bills without lifestyle changes.
  • Musty odors or visible dust plumes from supply registers.
  • Unusual noises—rattling, squealing, or grinding—during startup or shutdown.
  • Excessive humidity or condensation on windows in summer.
  • Yellow furnace burner flames instead of steady blue.

If any combination of these indicators appears, prompt professional evaluation helps avert larger mechanical failures and safeguards indoor air quality.
