Rarely do we call for service when our day is going well. Suffering both a water leak and electrical issue, HEP was there for me. Julia returned my service request quickly and politely worked me into the schedule as quickly as possible. Adam called before he arrived so I had time to put the dogs away as so often “too many paws slow the progress”. Adam listened to my attempts to describe the issue, then began investigating the complex wiring left by the previous owners. To both of our astonishment, he found a previous electrical box *behind the book shelf*!? Apparently, during a previous renovation, many circuits were bridged from the original to the new panel installed in the garage. Undaunted, Adam quickly found the faulty bridge, ran a new modern connection and new breaker and Ta-da, fixed!! Very, very pleased with the level of service, professionalism and fair cost to have this mystery resolved. Will gladly call on HEP again.

Solar Installation Process Breakdown

Step 1: Preliminary Consultation

Though no specific outreach details are included here, the preliminary phase typically centers on understanding the client’s objectives, roof characteristics, and budgetary boundaries. HEP then develops a high-level proposal outlining:

  • Estimated system size and annual kWh yield
  • Projected offset of current utility usage
  • Potential integration of battery storage or EV charging

Step 2: Onsite Survey

A HEP technician uses solar pathfinders or drone photogrammetry to generate a shade profile accurate to within 3%. Concurrently, structural measurements ascertain connection points for the racking system. Electrical panels are opened (with power isolated) to record busbar ratings and available breaker capacity.

Step 3: Engineering Design Package

Following data collection, HEP engineers compile:

  • CAD roof layouts
  • Single-line and three-line electrical diagrams
  • Structural load calculations
  • Rapid shutdown and fire safety compliance charts

All documents are prepared in accordance with Speedwell’s adopted building codes and available for authority review.

Step 4: Permitting and Utility Coordination

HEP submits the design package through Speedwell’s electronic permitting platform. Utility interconnection forms are completed, including system size, inverter make/model, and anti-islanding specifications. Net-metering applications outline expected monthly excess generation to facilitate credit allocation.

Step 5: Hardware Procurement

Dedicated procurement specialists schedule module, inverter, and racking shipments to arrive just before roof work commences, minimizing on-site storage time and potential damage. Inventory is inspected on arrival for:

  • Serial number documentation
  • Frame integrity
  • Connector seal integrity

Step 6: Installation and Quality Control

Crews typically need one to four days for residential arrays, and up to two weeks for large commercial rooftops. Quality control inspectors verify:

  • Flashings properly installed under shingles
  • Torque on mid-clamps and end-clamps according to manufacturer guidelines
  • DC string voltages within anticipated range
  • Labeling of disconnects per National Electrical Code requirements

Step 7: Utility Approval and PTO

Upon installation completion, HEP schedules the final inspection with Speedwell’s municipal building department. Approval triggers utility net-meter switch installation. When permission to operate (PTO) is granted, the system officially begins feeding clean energy to the grid.

Step 8: Ongoing Monitoring

An intuitive monitoring dashboard displays:

  • Real-time power output in kW and kWh
