We recently had some issues with our upstairs HVAC unit and it was not heating. We called HEP and they came out diagnosed the problem. Let us know how much it was going to cost to fix, as we only had to pay for the labor since the parts were still under warranty, and it really did not take that long to get the parts in. In. Justin , one of the HEP technicians, just left my residence with everything fixed and working. I must say it was a delightful experience as he was so respectful my home and let me know everything that he was doing in good old plain English. HEP should be proud to have a technician like Justin. He was personable and professional. I would highly recommend HEP for any of your plumbing, electrical or HVAC needs.

Jordan, Brayden, and Kaleb just wrapped up the job at my place and I could not be more pleased. They were professional, kind, and went above and beyond. My wife and I are building a house in Bulls Gap, and needed to hook up a pressure pump. I didn't realize what all would be needed, but they nailed it. They installed a pressure tank under the house and finished all of the piping and fittings. Because we don't have electric for our pump house, they got my generator running and made sure everything worked as it should. I won't use anybody else going forward. Thank you, guys! Y'all are awesome!

Core Generator Services Delivered by HEP in Bristol

Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance forms the backbone of HEP’s offering. Technicians schedule visits around client operations to minimise disruption. Tasks are tiered into weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual checkpoints, each focusing on specific components:

  • Weekly visual inspections for leaks, corrosion, or loose fittings
  • Monthly battery load tests, coolant level verifications, and belt tension assessments
  • Quarterly oil analysis, fuel polishing, and alternator resistance measurements
  • Annual full system shutdown, deep clean, and performance benchmarking

Emergency Breakdown Response

Even the most meticulously cared-for gensets can develop unforeseen issues due to extreme weather, sudden load spikes, or component fatigue. HEP maintains dedicated rapid-response teams within Bristol’s city limits, equipped with diagnostic tools, spare parts, and calibrated meters to isolate faults quickly.

Load Bank Testing

Running a generator without sufficient load can lead to wet stacking, carbon build-up, and inefficient combustion. HEP offers on-site resistive and reactive load bank tests to verify real-world capacity, thermal stability, and alternator performance. Load profiles are customised to mimic each client’s typical consumption patterns.

Control System Upgrades

Legacy panels sometimes struggle to communicate with modern Building Management Systems (BMS). HEP retrofits advanced digital governors, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and remote monitoring modules, turning a traditional standby generator into an intelligent power asset capable of data logging, predictive alerts, and internet-based analytics.

Fuel System Management

Contaminated diesel is one of the leading causes of generator failure. Bristol’s maritime climate can accelerate microbial growth, water ingress, and sludge formation in fuel tanks. HEP technicians conduct:

  • In-tank laboratory sampling and analysis
  • Fuel polishing to remove particulates, water, and microbial contaminants
  • Additive programmes to enhance cetane ratings and stabilise long-term storage

Through proactive fuel stewardship, clients avoid blocked injectors, clogged filters, and corrosive damage.

Acoustic & Vibration Mitigation

Urban planning regulations in Bristol often demand tight control of noise pollution. HEP installs bespoke attenuation packages, flexible anti-vibration mounts, and insulated enclosures. Proper damping reduces structural fatigue, heightens comfort for nearby residents, and ensures compliance with environmental standards.

Bristol’s Operating Environment: Unique Challenges and Solutions

Bristol experiences moderate rainfall, salty air from the Severn Estuary, and a blend of urban density with historic architecture. These factors influence generator performance and dictate specialised maintenance considerations.

Moisture & Corrosion

Marine aerosols accelerate oxidation on exposed conductors, frames, and louvers. HEP counteracts corrosion by:

  • Applying anti-corrosive coatings on metallic surfaces
  • Replacing standard fasteners with stainless-steel alternatives
  • Installing humidity-controlled heaters within enclosures

Airborne Particulate Matter

Construction projects across Temple Quarter and Filton’s aerospace corridor raise dust levels that can clog filters. HEP’s service plans include more frequent air-filter replacements and pressure differential checks.

Load Fluctuations

Bristol’s festival calendar—Balloon Fiesta, Harbour Festival, and numerous seasonal markets—creates intense but short-lived surges in electricity demand. Generators supporting event infrastructure face rapid cycling. HEP performs dynamic load assessments and adjusts governor gain parameters to stabilise output.

Compliance and Standards Observed by HEP

Operating a generator involves regulatory obligations. HEP helps clients in Bristol remain compliant with:

BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations)

Ensures all electrical installations and connections meet stringent safety requirements. HEP electricians inspect cable terminations, isolation devices, and earth bonding.

ISO 8528

Defines performance criteria for reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generating sets. HEP utilises ISO 8528 testing procedures for power output verification and transient response analysis.

EA & DEFRA Emission Guidelines

Environmental permitting rules restrict NOx, CO, particulate matter, and hydrocarbon emissions. HEP fits after-treatment systems (e.g. diesel particulate filters and SCR units) and documents stack tests for client records.

Local Planning Conditions

Bristol City Council may stipulate operational limits on sound pressure levels, fuel storage, and roof-mounted exhaust routing. HEP liaises with planning departments, supplies acoustic modelling data, and installs compliant hardware.

The HEP Preventative Maintenance Workflow

HEP’s structured workflow maximises transparency and consistency.

1. Site Survey & Risk Assessment

A qualified engineer documents physical constraints, ventilation paths, load schedules, and access routes. Potential hazards—fuel leaks, trip risks, confined spaces—are logged.

2. Customised Service Schedule

Based on generator capacity, usage patterns, and criticality, HEP drafts a bespoke timetable. High-priority facilities such as Bristol Royal Infirmary often opt for monthly visits, while smaller retail outlets may require quarterly checks.

3. Multi-Point Inspection & Testing

During each service appointment, engineers follow a digital checklist that covers:

  • Lubrication system: viscosity, zinc additive content, and contaminant index
  • Cooling circuit: glycol concentration, radiator fin cleanliness, and pump cavitation signs
  • Electrical integrity: insulation resistance, IR thermography on busbars, and breaker trip calibration
  • Safety interlocks: emergency stop function, door switches, and overspeed sensors

4. Reporting & Recommendations

Clients receive a detailed digital report including:

  • Photographs of key components
  • Oil analysis lab results
  • Emission readings
  • Actionable recommendations ranked by urgency

5. Follow-Up & Continuous Improvement

HEP maintains historical data for every generator serviced in Bristol. Trend analytics highlight progressively deteriorating parameters, triggering proactive component replacement before failure occurs.

Enhancing Generator Performance Through Data

The rise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has made remote monitoring integral to generator health. HEP integrates telemetry solutions that feed real-time information to secure cloud dashboards.

Benefits of Remote Monitoring

  • Immediate alerts on low fuel, high coolant temperature, or under-frequency
  • Load trend visualisation for capacity planning
  • Automatic runtime scheduling to balance mechanical wear
