FAQs
How are Petros smart smoke detectors different from traditional battery-operated alarms?
Petros smart detectors combine photo-electric and thermal sensors with an onboard processor, so they recognise both smouldering and fast-flame fires while minimising cooking-related false alarms. Unlike a stand-alone alarm that only beeps locally, our devices connect to your home network, send instant push notifications to all paired smartphones, trigger voice alerts, and can activate other smart devices (e.g., lighting paths for evacuation). They also run automatic self-tests and report their status through the Petros app, giving you constant insight into power level, sensor health, and Wi-Fi signal strength.
What wireless technologies do the detectors use and will they work if my internet goes down?
Each unit features dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz) for router connectivity plus a low-power Zigbee radio that forms a local mesh with other Petros smart products. If your broadband connection is lost, the detectors still communicate with each other over Zigbee and continue to sound their 85 dB sirens. Mobile alerts will queue locally and forward to your phone as soon as the internet is restored. For critical alerts during outages, you can add our optional LTE backup hub.
Can I integrate Petros smoke detectors with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit automations?
Yes. Through the Petros app you can enable voice-assistant skills or Matter-compatible bridging. Once linked, you can receive spoken warnings (“Smoke detected in kitchen”) on Alexa/Google speakers, view detector status on smart displays, and build automations—such as unlocking smart door locks, pausing HVAC blowers to slow smoke spread, or turning on all lights when an alarm is triggered. HomeKit setup uses a QR code on the detector for secure pairing.
How are the detectors powered and how long do the batteries last?
Petros offers two models: 1) hard-wired 120 V AC with a sealed 10-year lithium backup cell, and 2) fully battery-powered using a replaceable 6 × AA lithium pack. Advanced power-management keeps average current draw below 20 µA, so the battery-only version lasts 3–5 years in typical households. The app provides real-time percentage readings and sends escalating reminders when capacity drops below 15 %, plus a low-battery chirp as a final fail-safe.
What maintenance is required and how do the detectors test themselves?
No monthly climb-and-push testing is needed. Every week the unit silently checks its smoke chamber, temperature sensor, Wi-Fi radio, and battery voltage. Once a month it performs an 85 dB speaker burst while throttling volume to 10 % so it won’t disturb neighbours—then reports the results to the app. The insect/ dust screen is removable and dishwasher-safe; the app will prompt you annually to rinse it. All Petros detectors comply with UL 217 8th edition and automatically remind you to replace the whole unit after 10 years of service.
Does Petros offer professional installation and 24/7 monitoring?
Absolutely. Our licensed electricians can survey your property, plan optimal detector placement to meet NEC and local fire-code spacing rules, and complete same-day installation, including hard-wiring and interconnection with existing alarms. If you choose our monitoring plan, alerts are routed simultaneously to you and our UL-listed central station. Operators verify events via built-in microphone snapshots (audio only, no camera) and dispatch emergency services if you can’t be reached—all within 60 seconds on average.
