FAQs

How efficient are solar panels in Manchester’s climate and will they generate enough electricity?

Yes. Although Manchester receives less sunshine than southern England, modern photovoltaic (PV) modules still perform very well here. On average the region sees 900–1,000 kWh of solar energy per installed kWp each year. A standard 4 kWp domestic array will therefore generate roughly 3,600–4,000 kWh annually, covering 60–90 % of an average household’s electricity use. High-quality panels have good low-light performance, so even overcast days contribute meaningful output.

What size solar PV system do I need for my home or business?

System sizing depends on your annual electricity consumption, roof area, orientation, shading and budget. For a typical three-bed house in Manchester using 3,500–4,500 kWh a year, we usually fit a 3–5 kWp array (8–12 panels). Small businesses often opt for 10–30 kWp, while larger commercial roofs can host 50 kWp or more. During our free site survey we measure the roof, analyse half-hourly usage (if available) and design a system that maximises self-consumption and return on investment.

How much money can I save and what is the payback period?

Savings come from two sources: (1) electricity you generate and use on site, avoiding grid purchases at ~28–35 p/kWh, and (2) payments for surplus exported to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), currently 7–15 p/kWh. A well-oriented 4 kWp home system typically saves £700–£900 per year at today’s tariffs. Installed costs in Greater Manchester are around £5,000–£6,000, giving a simple payback of 6–8 years and internal rate of return (IRR) of 10–14 %. Commercial projects, where daytime consumption is higher, often see paybacks of 4–6 years.

Do you take care of all electrical work, permissions and grid connections?

Absolutely. We are NICEIC-approved electrical contractors and MCS-certified solar installers, so we can legally install, test and certify every part of your PV system, including DC wiring, AC isolators and consumer-board upgrades. We handle the DNO notification (G98) or application (G99) to Electricity North West, arrange scaffolding, and supply all mounting frames. On completion you receive the Electrical Installation Certificate, MCS certificate and building-control documentation, so the system complies with Part P and can be added to your home insurance or asset register.

What warranties and maintenance do you provide?

All panels we install come with a 25-year performance warranty (typically 80–87 % output after 25 years) and a 12-year product warranty. Inverters are covered for 5–12 years, extendable to 20. Our workmanship is insured for 5 years, and you receive an insurance-backed guarantee through the IWA. Solar PV systems have no moving parts, so routine maintenance is minimal: an annual visual check and occasional cleaning if dirt or moss accumulates. We offer optional remote monitoring and service visits to ensure continued optimal performance.

Are there grants, incentives or finance options available in Greater Manchester?

Homeowners can benefit from the 0 % VAT rate on domestic solar until March 2027. The Smart Export Guarantee pays for exported electricity, and several energy suppliers offer premium SEG rates for battery-equipped systems. Businesses can claim 100 % first-year capital allowances (full expensing) against corporation tax, and the Greater Manchester Growth Hub periodically runs Low Carbon Grants covering up to 50 % of project costs. We also work with finance partners who provide green loans and power-purchase agreements (PPAs) so you can go solar with no upfront capital.
