FAQs
How many smoke detectors are required in a typical Lynchburg home?
According to the Virginia Residential Code—adopted by the City of Lynchburg—smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in the hallway outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home (including basements). If you are remodeling or building new, hard-wired, interconnected units with battery back-up are required.
Are battery-powered detectors acceptable, or do they have to be hard-wired?
For existing homes, standalone battery-powered detectors are permitted as long as they are kept in working order. For new construction and most major renovations in Lynchburg, building officials require hard-wired, 120-volt, interconnected smoke detectors with a back-up battery. These interconnected units ensure that when one alarm sounds, they all sound.
How often should I test and replace smoke detector batteries?
Test every smoke detector at least once a month by pressing the test button until the alarm sounds. Replace standard 9-volt batteries twice a year—an easy reminder is during the spring and fall time-change. If your unit has a sealed 10-year lithium battery, test monthly but do not replace the battery; replace the entire unit at the end of its rated life or if it chirps that the battery is low.
When do smoke detectors themselves need to be replaced?
Smoke detectors lose sensitivity over time. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and most manufacturers recommend replacing all smoke detectors every 10 years from the date of manufacture. Check the manufacture date printed on the back of the unit. If it’s more than 10 years old, replace it—even if it still passes the test button.
Can I use combination smoke/CO detectors in place of separate units?
Yes. Combination photoelectric smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors that meet UL 217 (smoke) and UL 2034 (CO) standards are approved for use in Lynchburg residences. They should still follow placement rules for smoke alarms—inside sleeping rooms, outside sleeping areas, and on every level—while also being installed on or near the ceiling (not low on a wall) to meet smoke-detection guidelines.
Do you offer professional installation and maintenance services in the Lynchburg area?
Absolutely. Our licensed electricians provide code-compliant installation, interconnection, and inspection of smoke detectors throughout Lynchburg and the surrounding counties. We also offer annual maintenance plans that include functional testing, battery replacement, and end-of-life scheduling to keep your home or business protected and up to code.
