FAQs
What types of smoke detectors do you supply and which one is right for my Cowan property?
We stock photoelectric, ionisation, and dual-sensor detectors. Photoelectric units are best at detecting slow-smouldering fires common with upholstered furniture and wiring faults, while ionisation units react faster to fast-flame fires such as kitchen flare-ups. Dual-sensor models combine both technologies for all-round protection. For most Cowan homes and businesses we recommend photoelectric or dual-sensor alarms, installed as an interconnected network to meet NSW and Australian Standard AS 3786 requirements.
How often should smoke detectors be tested, serviced, and replaced?
Test each alarm once a month by pressing the test button until the siren sounds. Replace backup batteries every 12 months unless the unit has a sealed 10-year lithium battery. Vacuum the detector’s exterior every six months to clear dust. Australian Standard AS 1851 and Fire & Rescue NSW both specify full replacement of smoke alarms every 10 years or earlier if the unit fails a test, is damaged, or issues nuisance alarms.
Where is the correct location for installing smoke detectors in my home or business?
Regulations require at least one alarm on every storey, positioned between sleeping areas and the remainder of the dwelling. In multi-storey homes place alarms in stairwells; in apartments install them in hallways outside bedrooms. Avoid installing within 300 mm of corners, air-conditioning vents, ceiling fans, or light fittings. For added safety, locate additional detectors inside bedrooms, living rooms, and any area containing major electrical appliances. Our licenced electricians will design a layout that complies with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and local Cowan council guidelines.
Are hard-wired smoke detectors better than battery-only alarms?
Hard-wired detectors are powered by the building’s 240 V supply and include a backup battery, reducing the risk of power-loss failure. They can be interconnected so when one alarm activates, all alarms sound, giving occupants maximum warning. Battery-only models are easier to install in existing buildings where wiring is difficult. NSW legislation requires new builds and major renovations to use hard-wired, interconnected detectors; existing homes may use either type provided they are working and correctly located.
What ongoing maintenance do your smoke detection systems require?
Besides monthly testing and semi-annual cleaning, we recommend an annual professional inspection that includes checking power supplies, interconnection signals, alarm volume output, and expiry date. During the visit our technicians also update the logbook required under AS 1851 for commercial premises in Cowan. For large sites we can integrate the detectors into a monitored fire panel that self-tests and reports faults automatically.
Do your smoke detectors comply with local Cowan regulations and Australian Standards?
Yes. All products we supply carry the AS 3786:2014 approval mark and conform to the National Construction Code (NCC) and NSW Environmental Planning & Assessment Regulation 2000. Our electricians are NSW licenced and issue a Certificate of Compliance Electrical Work (CCEW) after installation. We also ensure placement, interconnection, and labelling meet the specific requirements of Ku-ring-gai Council, which administers the Cowan area.
