What our customers say

We needed a repair to our AC system at the peak of last summer's heat and HEP were the only folks who were able to come out (or even answer the phone, for that matter). They actually managed to get someone to our place that same day and relieve our 95° misery. So I was quick to consider them last week when we had more trouble with our 10-year-old system this spring. Again they were very responsive - and although they weren't able to fix the problem right then (a combination of factors necessitated a more extensive replacement) they promptly quoted the more involved work that was needed. I considered other options for a couple of days without seeing an obvious better choice that was available to do the work, then called to say I was ready to hire HEP for the work. Bob Mathews promptly came to my workplace to finalize all the details of the proposal with me... and then arranged for the work to begin within two days, even though it was an awkward downtown job the would require a crane for roof access. When the actual day of work came I had a last minute panic about the specific equipment choice we'd made and Bob was quick to answer the phone and go over the details again, clarifying my area of uncertainty. The team who came to do the actual installation of our new coils and condenser unit consisted of Tommy Fitzgerald and Joshua McCarty, both excellent guys. They were intent on doing a thorough job and communicating what they were up to as they did it. My wife and I both felt completely comfortable with them. All in all this was a great experience, even though it involved suddenly having to spend a bit of cash we weren't expecting to. Thanks Bob, Joe, Tommy, and Joshua - it's great to have working AC again!

The tech showed up in the timeframe they promised. Curteous, friendly service. He dug around in his truck to find as many coupons as he could for me. The salesperson showed up shortly after as I needed a new HVAC unit. The install team called the next morning in the timeframe promised to let me know they'd be there shortly. Everything was checked to make sure it was working properly before they left. All trash and mess and old equipment was hauled away. HEP isn't the cheapest in town but I've dealt with the cheapest and prefer to get service I can trust for a little more. All options were explained to me with their recommendations so I felt free to decline their suggestion if I chose.

Managing Humidity in Hixson Homes: Why Professional Dehumidifier Installation Matters

Living in the Tennessee River Valley has countless benefits, but Hixson’s long, muggy summers can make indoor comfort a challenge. Relative humidity regularly soars above 70 percent, and when that damp air seeps into attics, crawl spaces, and living areas, homeowners notice musty smells, sticky rooms, and higher energy bills. HEP Company specializes in heating and air conditioning solutions that tackle those issues head-on, with professional dehumidifier installation tailored specifically for Hixson’s subtropical climate.

A properly sized, professionally installed dehumidifier does far more than dry the air. It protects structural components, improves HVAC efficiency, guards your family’s health, and helps furnishings last longer. Below is an in-depth look at why humidity control is crucial in Hixson, what sets HEP’s installation service apart, and how a whole-house or crawl-space dehumidifier integrates seamlessly with existing HVAC equipment.

How Excess Moisture Impacts Homes and Health

Mold, Mildew, and Microbial Growth

Hixson’s humid air feeds mold spores and mildew colonies. Sheetrock, carpet backing, and HVAC ducts dampen quickly when humidity climbs above 60 percent, creating a perfect breeding ground. Mold growth produces musty odors and releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that irritate lungs and sinuses. Over time, visible patches form on walls and around vents, leading to costly remediation.

Wood Damage and Structural Concerns

Hardwood floors, framing lumber, and wooden furniture absorb moisture. Expansion causes warping, buckling, and gaps between planks, while prolonged exposure encourages rot in subfloors, window sills, and joists. Crawl spaces are particularly vulnerable because they sit close to moist soil and often lack conditioned air.

Allergens and Indoor Air Quality

Dust mites thrive when relative humidity exceeds 50 percent. Their waste products are a leading trigger of year-round allergy and asthma flare-ups. Excess humidity also allows bacteria and viruses to remain airborne longer, increasing the likelihood of respiratory infections.

The Role of a Whole-House Dehumidifier in an HVAC System

Integrated Humidity Control

A whole-house dehumidifier connects directly to the supply and return ducts of your existing heating and air conditioning system. As return air passes through the dehumidifier, excess moisture condenses on cooled coils and drains away, delivering dry, comfortable air back into the living space. Unlike small plug-in units, an integrated system pulls moisture from every conditioned room, not just one area.

Energy Efficiency Benefits

Dry air feels cooler than humid air at the same temperature. By lowering indoor humidity, a dehumidifier allows the thermostat to be set a few degrees higher without sacrificing comfort, reducing air-conditioning run time. Furthermore, drier air helps your AC remove sensible heat more efficiently, preventing short-cycling and unnecessary wear on compressors.

Why HEP Company Is the Local Choice for Dehumidifier Installation

Certified HVAC Technicians

HEP’s installation teams hold NATE and EPA certifications, ensuring every technician understands the science of psychrometrics—how temperature, humidity, and airflow interact inside a home. Their expertise guarantees that equipment is properly sized and calibrated for Hixson’s climate conditions.

Seamless Integration With Existing Systems

Heating and cooling systems vary widely in age, duct design, and load requirements. HEP technicians evaluate static pressure, airflow rates, and return-air placement to connect the new dehumidifier without disrupting the performance of furnaces, air handlers, or heat pumps. Custom plenums and flexible ductwork create an airtight fit that maximizes moisture removal.

Post-Installation Support and Maintenance

Once a dehumidifier is online, its filters, coils, and drain lines need periodic attention to operate at peak efficiency. HEP offers tailored maintenance plans, ensuring the system continues protecting your home from excess moisture season after season.

  1. Initial Consultation and Home Assessment
  2. Humidity Load Calculation
  3. Equipment Selection and Sizing
  4. Installation Scheduling
  5. Professional Installation
  6. Final Calibration and Testing
  7. Homeowner Orientation

Initial Home Assessment

During a site visit, HEP technicians measure baseline humidity levels, inspect crawl spaces, basements, and attics, and review the home’s insulation and vapor barrier status. Infrared cameras may be used to identify hidden moisture pockets inside walls or under flooring.

Load Calculation and Equipment Selection

Using Manual J and Manual S methodologies, HEP calculates latent heat loads to determine the exact moisture-removal capacity required, expressed in pints per day. Oversized units waste energy by short-cycling, while undersized models struggle to keep up. HEP’s data-driven approach eliminates guesswork.

Professional Installation Steps

• Mounting the dehumidifier on vibration-isolating pads or hanging straps
• Fabricating supply and return plenums for optimal airflow
• Installing a dedicated drain line to a condensate pump, sump pit, or exterior discharge
• Integrating low-voltage controls with the existing thermostat or smart home system
• Sealing all duct connections with mastic to prevent air leaks

System Calibration and Verification

After installation, technicians adjust blower speed, set humidity setpoints, and monitor the dew point. A final walkthrough includes verifying condensate drainage, testing safety float switches, and demonstrating filter replacement procedures.

Key Features of Modern Dehumidifiers Installed by HEP

Smart Controls and Remote Monitoring

Wi-Fi–enabled controls let homeowners track indoor humidity from a smartphone. Data logging shows daily and seasonal trends, while instant alerts warn if drain lines clog or filters need servicing.

High-Capacity Moisture Removal

Today's whole-house models pull 90–130 pints of water per day while consuming less energy than multiple portable units. Variable-speed compressors modulate output for precise control, even during partial-load conditions.

Quiet Operation and Discreet Design

Insulated cabinets, rubber grommets, and dynamically balanced fans keep noise levels below 55 dB. Units install in basements, mechanical closets, or crawl spaces, freeing living areas of bulky appliances.

Signs Your Hixson Home May Need a Dehumidifier

• Musty odors that linger despite cleaning
• Visible condensation on window glass or HVAC supply vents
• Sticky or clammy air even when the AC is running
• Peeling paint, bubbling wallpaper, or warped hardwood floors
• Frequent allergy or asthma symptoms indoors
• Corrosion on plumbing fixtures or electronics
• Higher than normal summer energy bills

Addressing these symptoms quickly prevents more extensive structural or health issues.

Placement Options: Whole-House vs. Crawl Space Dehumidifiers

Attic and Basement Installations

Attics and basements provide convenient access to main trunk ducts, making them ideal for whole-house units. Ensuring sufficient airflow and insulation prevents temperature extremes that could affect performance.

Crawl Space Encapsulation

Hixson homes with vented crawl spaces often suffer from mold and wood rot. HEP specializes in encapsulation, sealing vents, installing vapor barriers, and adding a dedicated crawl-space dehumidifier. This combination stabilizes humidity below 60 percent year-round.

Ducted Configurations

For homes lacking unfinished spaces, a ducted dehumidifier can be mounted in a utility room or closet. Slim-profile units pair with flexible duct runs that draw air from return grilles and supply conditioned, dried air back into the system.

Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Dehumidifier Performing

Filter Replacement Schedule

Replace or wash the air filter every three to six months, depending on dust load. A clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces moisture removal.

Coil Cleaning

Evaporator coils collect biofilm over time. Gently clean with an approved coil cleaner to maintain heat transfer efficiency.

Drain Line Inspection

Ensure the condensate line slopes downward with no kinks. An annual flush with a mild bleach solution prevents algae buildup that could trigger float-switch shutdowns.

Regular maintenance prolongs equipment life and safeguards indoor air quality.

How a Dehumidifier Supports Air Conditioning Efficiency

Lowering Latent Heat Load

Air conditioners primarily remove sensible heat. When confronted with high latent load (moisture), they run longer and less efficiently. A dehumidifier offloads that latent heat, letting the AC focus on temperature control.

Reducing AC Short Cycling

Proper humidity control prevents temperature swings that cause frequent starts and stops. Smoother AC run cycles extend compressor life and lower electricity consumption.

Environmental Benefits of Proper Humidity Control

Lower Carbon Footprint

By allowing higher thermostat settings without sacrificing comfort, a whole-house dehumidifier reduces HVAC runtime, translating into fewer greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants.

Preserving Home Resources

Moisture damage leads to premature replacement of flooring, drywall, and furniture. Preventing rot and mold extends the lifespan of these materials, reducing waste in landfills.

Common Myths About Home Dehumidification

Myth: Air Conditioning Alone Handles Humidity

Air conditioners remove some moisture as a by-product of cooling, but they are not optimized for year-round humidity control, especially during mild, rainy spring and fall days when temperatures drop yet moisture remains high.

Myth: Dehumidifiers Consume Too Much Power

Modern whole-house units use efficient compressors, ECM blower motors, and smart controls that operate only when needed. By reducing latent load, they often lower overall household energy use.

Dehumidification and Smart Home Ecosystems

Smart-home platforms are rapidly transforming the way residents in Hixson manage indoor comfort, and dehumidifiers installed by HEP fit neatly into that evolving landscape.

Connected Comfort Features

• Integration with voice assistants for hands-free humidity adjustments
• IFTTT applets that coordinate humidity control with window sensors, preventing the system from running while windows are open
• Real-time dashboards that display temperature, relative humidity, and dew point side by side, giving homeowners a holistic view of indoor climate

Automation Scenarios

• Vacation Mode: Automatically lowers humidity setpoints to protect wood and electronics while minimizing energy use
• Nighttime Comfort: Synchronizes bedroom humidity with sleep-tracking devices to enhance restfulness
• Allergy Season Mode: Activates enhanced dehumidification when outdoor pollen counts spike, reducing indoor allergen load

By weaving humidity control into broader smart-home routines, HEP delivers a seamless, tech-forward comfort experience.

Compliance With Local Building Codes and Standards

Proper installation isn’t only about performance; it’s also about meeting Hixson’s regulatory requirements.

Ventilation Requirements

Local codes mandate that any added equipment must not impede minimum airflow rates defined for habitable spaces. HEP verifies that duct modifications preserve those thresholds, ensuring fresh-air exchange remains uncompromised.

Electrical and Drainage Specifications

• Dedicated GFCI-protected circuits prevent overloads and meet safety guidelines
• Condensate drain lines are sloped a minimum of 1/8-inch per foot and terminated in approved locations away from foundations, safeguarding against soil erosion and basement seepage

Adhering to these standards protects homeowners and maintains property value during future inspections or resale transactions.

Lifestyle and Productivity Enhancements

Better Sleep Quality

Studies show that relative humidity between 40 and 50 percent promotes deeper REM cycles. By maintaining that range, a whole-house dehumidifier contributes to more restorative rest and daytime alertness.

Protecting Home Electronics

Game consoles, computers, and smart-TV circuit boards corrode faster in moist environments. Stable humidity prolongs their lifespan and prevents sudden failures during power surges.

Improved Indoor Plant Care

Many houseplants prefer moderate humidity. Consistent control prevents fungal gnats and root rot, allowing foliage to thrive without the guesswork of fluctuating moisture levels.

The HEP Detailed Quality Assurance Checklist

• Verification of Manual J latent load calculations
• Confirmation of return-air sizing to prevent static-pressure drops
• Thermal imaging scan post-installation to ensure even moisture removal
• Documentation of electrical load balance on the service panel
• Customer walk-through of filter access, smart-control setup, and maintenance intervals

This systematic approach ensures every installation meets exacting standards for performance, safety, and longevity.

Understanding Psychrometrics for the Modern Homeowner

Relative Humidity vs. Dew Point

Relative humidity represents the percentage of moisture in the air compared with the maximum the air can hold at a given temperature. Dew point, on the other hand, is the temperature at which condensation begins. Monitoring both metrics provides a clearer picture of indoor comfort.

Latent vs. Sensible Heat

Sensible heat changes air temperature, while latent heat changes moisture content. A dehumidifier primarily tackles latent heat, preventing the air conditioner from being overworked during Tennessee’s sultry evenings when temperatures drop but moisture lingers.

Conclusion: Long-Term Comfort and Protection for Hixson Residents

Heat, air conditioning, and humidity are interconnected pieces of the indoor comfort puzzle. In Hixson’s humid climate, overlooking moisture control can undermine even the most advanced HVAC system. HEP Company’s professional dehumidifier installation service brings balance back to your home environment, reducing allergens, protecting structural components, and trimming energy costs. When you pair skilled technicians, precision sizing, and high-performance equipment, the result is a healthier, more comfortable living space that stands up to Tennessee’s muggiest days.
