FAQs

What does the Hands-On Experience Plumbing program in Guild involve?

Our program immerses you in practical plumbing tasks from day one. You’ll work with real pipes, fixtures, soldering torches, and diagnostic tools in a controlled workshop that simulates residential and light-commercial environments. Each module combines a brief classroom briefing with supervised lab time where you cut, fit, join, test, and troubleshoot plumbing systems to proper code standards.

Do I need prior plumbing knowledge or licenses to enroll?

No previous plumbing experience or licensing is required. The course is designed for beginners as well as career changers. We start with fundamental safety procedures, tool identification, and basic theory before progressing to intermediate topics such as venting, drainage, and water-heater installation. Participants must, however, be at least 18 years old and comfortable using basic hand tools.

What specific skills will I acquire by the end of the course?

Graduates leave with competency in reading plumbing schematics, measuring and cutting piping (copper, PEX, PVC, and steel), soldering and crimping joints, installing fixtures (toilets, faucets, valves), setting up drainage and vent systems, pressure-testing for leaks, and applying local building codes. Soft skills such as job-site safety, customer communication, and estimating material costs are also emphasized.

Is there a certification or credential awarded upon completion?

Yes. Upon successfully finishing all practical assessments and a written code test, you receive a Guild Certificate in Residential Plumbing Fundamentals. While this certificate is not a state journeyman license, it is recognized by many regional contractors and can count toward required apprenticeship hours in several jurisdictions. We also provide guidance on the next steps for state licensing or union apprenticeship entry.

How long does the program run, and what is the weekly schedule?

The course runs for 10 weeks. Classes meet three evenings per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm) plus two Saturday labs each month (8:00 am – 2:00 pm). This hybrid schedule lets working adults balance training with day jobs while still accumulating over 90 hours of instructor-led, hands-on practice.

Do I need to bring my own tools or safety gear?

All specialized plumbing tools—pipe wrenches, cutters, bending springs, torches, press machines—are supplied on-site. We also provide consumables such as flux, solder, fittings, and test gauges. Students must supply their own basic PPE: steel-toe boots, safety glasses, and work gloves. Optional gear like kneepads and personal tool belts are recommended but not mandatory. A detailed equipment list is emailed upon registration.
